Details of our dementia care courses:
Introduction to Person-Centred Dementia Care
Working with people with dementia for the first time can be daunting. During the day, trainees are encouraged to express their fears and pre-conceived ideas. Trainees will learn what dementia is and how it can affect behaviour, the importance of good communication with the service user, relatives and other members of staff, and the basic principles of person centred care.
Duration = 1 day
An in-depth exploration of communication, focusing on the service user, but also considers communication with relatives, external agencies and other members of staff. Trainees will be encouraged to develop their listening skills, empathy and verbal and non-verbal communication and to be aware of barriers to communication. A popular part of this course is the body language section in the afternoon which always contains a surprise or two! Other areas covered are telephone communication and documentation.
Duration = 1 day
A stimulating environment is a healthy environment. This day explores the importance of activity based care. The need for activities to be built into all areas of life in the home is addressed, introducing many ways in which carers can use everyday tasks as stimulating activities for service users. Trainees will learn how to use life history and reminiscence work to stimulate service users to help improve their self-esteem and sense of well-being.
Activities co-ordinators will leave with a wealth of new ideas to try, and a renewed enthusiasm for what is a very important role in the home.
Duration = 1 day
Understanding & Managing Challenging Behaviour
This is a highly interactive, practical day. We explore behaviour as a form of communication; social conditioning, low arousal techniques and the ABC approach to managing challenging behaviour. A part of the afternoon is reserved to discuss actual cases within the home that are challenging for staff, (with strict confidentiality boundaries) and ways in which they can be addressed.
Duration = 1 day
Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow Certificated Course (Alzheimer’s Society)
A very popular exploration of all aspects of dementia care, lasting for half a day each week for eight weeks. Staff are encouraged to reflect on their work during the week and to bring their written thoughts back with them to the next session. Topics covered include:
- the experience of people with dementia
- the signs and symptoms of dementia
- the need for good communication, values and attitudes in the care home
- activities of everyday life
- supporting personal care
- eating and drinking
- maintaining and building relationships
- understanding behaviour we find difficult
- the importance of teamwork
Experience reveals that relationships between staff are stronger and more supportive by the end of the course as a result of their shared learning journey. The course ends with a multiple choice test, after successful completion staff will be awarded a certificate and badge by the Alzheimer’s Society.
Duration = 8 x ½ days
