Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults
An interactive day, covering legal implications of the POVA List and the Mental Capacity Act. Trainees will explore why abuse occurs, what constitutes abuse and how to report abuse, what to do and what not to do, and how to document abuse correctly. This is a lively and informative exploration of the POVA list in practical terms, but during the day we will also address how staff will deal with emotionally challenging situations in terms of whistle blowing and reporting.
Duration = 1 day
Vulnerable Adults and Sexuality
Many staff prefer not to think about sexuality and the elderly. This workshop examines trainees’ responses to relationships within the care home and some of the fears and concerns that staff may hold. Sex can be a very sensitive issue, becoming even more complicated when the service user has dementia and the family is involved.
This workshop will explore this potential emotional and legal minefield, taking into account the Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Act 2006 and the Mental Capacity Act. At the end of the day staff will understand the legal rights of the service user, have some tools to deal with inappropriate behaviour in public, how to keep themselves safe and how to protect service users from abuse. They will also know what to do if they suspect sexual abuse is happening in the home and how to record and report this correctly.
Duration = 1 day
Duration = ½ day
Duration = ½ day
This day is a sensitive exploration of the practicalities and emotional implications of death. Many people are touched by the death of a resident – family, other service users and, of course, carers. During this day we will consider how a dying resident can be kept comfortable, what happens at the time of death, what staff need to do, the role of the undertaker and what happens at a crematorium. Funeral customs of different cultures will be addressed. The grieving cycle will be examined, and this often offers an opportunity for staff to talk about their own losses and their feelings about the death of resident they have cared for. Basic bereavement counseling skills will be taught to allow staff to support relatives and each other in their grief.
Duration = 1 day
Supervision Skills for supervisors and managers
There is a growing focus across disciplines on supervision. This day will give the supervisor the skills to deliver effective supervision to staff. Topics covered are: what is supervision? How does supervision differ from mentoring or appraising? Why supervise? How to plan a supervision session, Listening skills, The Supervision Cycle and documentation.
Duration = 1 day
Many homes now find it more cost effective to use in-house trainers to train staff. This workshop will give new trainers to tools they require to plan and build a training course. Trainees will learn to use training materials and methods to accommodate different learning styles, how to deliver the course and how to manage challenging trainees! They will also explore different evaluation methods and the importance of follow up after a training session. Trainees will be given the opportunity on day 2 to put together and deliver their own short training session.
