Course Outline

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is an exciting group therapy for people living with dementia. CST offers an evidence-based, effective therapy which is recommended by NICE to enhance the cognitive function of group members. Most importantly, it provides an enjoyable space filled with laughter, friendly debate and physical activity.

Small groups of around six people with mild to moderate dementia meet twice a week for an initial 14 sessions, facilitated by two CST trained staff. After this, the sessions are followed by ongoing maintenance sessions to maintain abilities. Each structured session is fully documented, providing valuable evidence for CQC inspections.

This course is ideal for your Activity Co-Ordinators or any staff with a passion for improving dementia care. They will discover the theory of CST and the enhanced communication methods required to encourage engagement. They will then have the opportunity to practice their new skills in a role play facilitation session.

At the end of the course, attendees will be ready to introduce Cognitive Stimulation Therapy into your service for people with dementia. They will also have the skills to adapt activities to help new and existing residents to form friendship groups and ease the transition to life in a residential home.
