Course Outline
Tier 2 of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in Learning Disability and Autism is a one-day, face to face course co-delivered by Experts with Lived Experience and supported by a Facilitating Trainer, split into two sessions; AM – Learning Disability Awareness and PM – Autism Awareness.
Our Expert with Lived Experience co-trainers bring invaluable lived experience to every session and are an integral part of our team; offering real insight into the strengths and the challenges faced by autistic people and people with a learning disability. They all have true passion for sharing their stories, and helping others build real understanding and empathy. As dedicated advocates, they work tirelessly to combat misconceptions and raise awareness, creating impactful and meaningful learning experiences for everyone who attends this important training.
Building on the Tier 1 e-learning, this training helps you give safe, compassionate, and person-centred care and support to people with learning disabilities and autistic people. You will learn how to recognise and challenge unconscious bias and avoid making assumptions about a person’s behaviour or symptoms, so that health needs are not missed or misunderstood.
The course shares key lessons from the Learning from Lives and Deaths Reviews (LeDeR) to improve care and outcomes. You will explore the STOMP campaign to reduce overuse of medication and learn how to make reasonable adjustments that meet each person’s needs. The session also covers the Mental Capacity Act 2005, appropriate Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR) decisions, and how to communicate well with individuals and families. By the end, you will feel confident providing care that treats everyone with dignity, respect, and understanding.
We are proud to be the first Training Provider to be recognised with the Government-recommended Quality Assured Care Learning Mark, which includes our Tier 1 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training courses.
