What is the Care Workforce Pathway?

The Care Workforce Pathway is a national framework designed to support career development in adult social care. It sets out a clear structure from new starters through to advanced practice roles, ensuring consistent development opportunities for all.

Care Workforce Pathway - New to Care

1. NC: New to Care

Would normally have been in their first care role for up to 12 months.
Care Workforce Pathway - Care or Support Worker

2. CSW: Care or Support Worker

Established in their role, they have consolidated their skills and experience.
Care Workforce Pathway - Enhanced Care Worker

3. ECW: Enhanced Care Worker

Delegated healthcare activities by regulated professionals and/or provides specialist condition specific support.
Care Workforce Pathway - Personal Assistant

4. PA: Personal Assistant

Supports an individual to live more independently, usually in their own home.
Care Workforce Pathway - Supervisor or Leader

5. SL: Supervisor or Leader

Might be a team leader with some staff management responsibilities.
Care Workforce Pathway - Practice Leader

6. PL: Practice Leader

Practises a care specialism and helps others develop theirs but does not have line management responsibilities.
Care Workforce Pathway - Deputy Manager

7. DM: Deputy Manager

Has staff management responsibilities and helps to run the service.
Care Workforce Pathway - Registered Manager

8. RM: Registered Manager

Focuses on regulatory and legal requirements and runs the service.
