Course Outline

The Well-Led programme is a national development programme.  It was developed by Skills for Care, in partnership with registered managers.  If you are a manager of adult social care services, this programme was developed for you.  The programme is grounded in the reality of social care delivery and draws upon the experience of those who understand the day-to-day challenges of leading a care team.

Well-led is delivered over four interactive modules. Each module will be a blend of discussion, film footage and activities to appeal to different learning styles. You will receive a workbook for each module which also includes recommendations for further reading and resource references.

Organisations rated good and outstanding by CQC share examples of practice to enhance learning and understanding. Well-Led is underpinned by models of leadership that can be practically applied to deliver change and promote best practice.

The programme is delivered over four full-day workshops. Learners should leave the programme feeling empowered, confident, connected with others and well-equipped to effectively lead a workforce with the right values to provide high quality person-centred care.

Each session focusses on a different element of care leadership.  At the end of every session, learners will complete an action plan and will be expected to report back on their progress at the next session.  The focus is on achieving practical outcomes, rather than simply being a theoretical exercise.  Peer support is encouraged and professional relationships formed during the course often continue after completion of the programme.

The Well-Led national development programme is aimed at registered managers and other managers currently working in adult social care settings who want to develop their leadership skills and knowledge. It is suitable for both new and experienced managers in the social care sector. It is designed to enable leaders to deliver care in line with the expectations of a well-led service. The series of practical modules will develop managers’ leadership skills, enabling them to advance their service and have a real impact in their workplace.

Module 1: Know yourself – looking inwards
At the end of this module, learners will:

  • understand what leadership is and how it differs from management
  • understand the behaviours and qualities necessary to achieve effective leadership in adult social care settings
  • understand resilience in the context of social care and be able to identify techniques and strategies to boost resilience
  • gain a deeper understanding of your personality and leadership qualities, your strengths and areas for development.

Module 2: Leading a successful service – looking around
At the end of this module, learners will:

  • understand what a successful service looks and feels like
  • have engaged with key leadership theories and concepts on leading success
  • understand the importance of vision, values, capability and evidence to building success
  • have experience of engaging in coaching conversations to identify priorities for action
    have developed a commitment to action

Module 3: Leading high-performing teams – looking sideways
At the end of this module, learners will:

  • understand the characteristics of high-performing teams
  • have gained practical insights into how to nurture and lead high-performing teams
  • understand how to create a culture of continuous improvement through leading people performance management
  • developed strategies for having courageous conversations

Module 4: Leading in and beyond the boundaries of your service – looking outwards
At the end of this module, learners will:

  • recognise the national context of changing systems in the sector
  • be familiar with your wider system and opportunities for engagement
  • feel more confident about influencing and persuading others
