Course Outline

This autism awareness course was created as an introduction to autism by Stacey Parker, our Charter Psychologist. It is tailored for individuals who want to increase their awareness of autism, understanding autism spectrum, and enhance their ability to create supportive environments for autistic individuals. Presented in simple language, this autism training aims to dispel myths, explore lived experiences, and boost confidence in supporting autistic people.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability affecting how people communicate and interact with the world. One in around 100 people are believed to have autism, meaning there are approximately 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK.

The autism awareness course covers the following topics:

Increase Awareness of Autism
Our autism awareness course begins by focusing on increasing awareness of autism. We’ll delve into what autism is, dispelling common misconceptions, and providing a foundational understanding to lay the groundwork for further exploration.

Understand the Concept of the Autism Spectrum and ‘Neurotypical’
Participants will gain insight into the autism spectrum, understanding that autism is a spectrum with diverse strengths and challenges. The concept of ‘neurotypical’ will be explained, creating a basis for recognising and appreciating neurodiversity.

Explore Myths and Misconceptions Surrounding Autism
We’ll address myths and misconceptions surrounding autism to foster a more accurate and informed understanding. By debunking these misconceptions, participants will be better equipped to interact with autistic individuals in a supportive and respectful manner.

Be Aware of the Daily Lived Experience of Autistic People
The autism awareness course will provide a window into the daily lived experience of autistic individuals, highlighting both challenges and strengths.
